Photo courtesy of Deseret News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1886<\/strong> &#8211; The Denver &amp; Rio Grande Western Railroad opens the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Lake Park Bathing Resort<\/span> on the shore of the Great Salt Lake, not far west of Farmington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1895<\/strong> &#8211; The lake&#8217;s water levels recede drastically and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Lake Park closes<\/span> permanently at the end of the season. Vice president and part owner, Simon Bamberger, makes plans for a new resort further inland using buildings from Lake Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1896<\/strong> &#8211; The new <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Lagoon<\/span> Resort opens in Farmington at what was then the end of the Bamberger Railway commuter line connecting to Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1906<\/strong> &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Shoot-The-Chutes<\/span> opens as Lagoon&#8217;s first thrill ride. The first <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/lagoon-and-the-fair-part-i\/\">Davis County Fair<\/a> is held at Lagoon in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1907<\/strong> &#8211; The <span style=\"color:#ff6100\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Scenic Railway<\/span> is introduced &#8211; Lagoon&#8217;s first roller coaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1908<\/strong> &#8211; The Bamberger Railway reaches <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Ogden<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1911<\/strong> &#8211; Horse races begin at the new <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/race-track\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Race Track<\/span><\/a> north of the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1916<\/strong> &#8211; Simon Bamberger is elected <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Utah&#8217;s governor<\/span>. He is the state&#8217;s first democratic governor and the second Jewish governor in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1918<\/strong> &#8211; An electric-powered <a href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/carousel\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carousel<\/span><\/a> from California replaces an older one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1920<\/strong> &#8211; Farmington Creek <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/springtime-recovery-at-lagoon\/\">floods<\/a> in the spring leaving two feet of mud in the swimming area. Miller. Over the years it has been known by many names and today it&#8217;s simply called the <a href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/roller-coaster\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Roller Coaster<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1927<\/strong> &#8211; A new <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Swimming Pool<\/span> with &#8220;water fit to drink&#8221; opens just north of Lagoon Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1929<\/strong> &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/lagoon-and-the-fair-part-i\/\">Davis County Fair<\/a> begins to take place annually at Lagoon until 1942.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1941<\/strong> &#8211; The <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/flying-aces\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7254\">Flying Scooters<\/a><\/span> (known as Flying Aces today), are installed east of the Carousel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/shootthechutesDNca1940s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/shootthechutesDNca1940s.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/shootthechutesDNca1940s.jpg 900w, https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/shootthechutesDNca1940s-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/shootthechutesDNca1940s-768x282.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shoot-The-Chutes next to Roller Coaster (known as the Giant Dipper or Silver Coaster) in a photo from around the late 1930s or early &#8217;40s. Photo courtesy of Deseret News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1943<\/strong> &#8211; Lagoon closes during <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">World War II<\/span>. The buildings fall into disrepair and the gardens are overtaken with weeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1946<\/strong> &#8211; The park <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">re-opens<\/span> under a lease by the Utah Amusement Corporation, consisting of Ranch S. Kimball and the Freed brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1947<\/strong> &#8211; Many new buildings are added and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">further improvements<\/span> are made on rides and around the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1948<\/strong> &#8211; Lagoon begins pre-season openings on weekends before the regular summer season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1952<\/strong> &#8211; Passenger traffic on the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Bamberger Railway<\/span> ends. Photo: Salt Lake Tribune<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1953<\/strong> &#8211; A tragic <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/the-fire-of-53\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7500\">fire<\/a> on the night of November 14th destroys the Dancing Pavilion, Fun House, part of the Roller Coaster and the west side of the Midway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1954<\/strong> &#8211; An <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/the-new-lagoon\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14272\">ambitious rebuilding effort<\/a> allows the park to re-open on time with several new rides such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/rock-o-plane\/\">Rock-O-Plane<\/a>, <a title=\"Octopus\" href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/octopus\/\">Octopus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/spook-house\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12465\">Spook House<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/tilt-a-whirl\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"9245\">Tilt-A-Whirl<\/a>. The biggest addition is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/patio-gardens\/\">Patio Gardens<\/a> which would showcase the top performers in entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/19570501-Mother-Gooseland-Logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"140\" src=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/19570501-Mother-Gooseland-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"19570501 Mother Gooseland Logo\" class=\"wp-image-1597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/19570501-Mother-Gooseland-Logo.jpg 410w, https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/19570501-Mother-Gooseland-Logo-300x102.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1956<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/mother-gooseland-kiddieland\/\">Mother Gooseland<\/a> opens with new rides, play areas and food offerings just for kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1957<\/strong> &#8211; A brand new <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/fun-house-1957\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4819\">Fun House<\/a><\/span> is completed a few years after the first one burned down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1958<\/strong> &#8211; Lagoon management begins leasing the old Rainbow Randevu ballroom in Salt Lake City. They opened it under the name Danceland, but it was soon changed to <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/outside-the-park\/the-terrace\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"25\">The Terrace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1959<\/strong> &#8211; A miniature <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/showboat\/\">Showboat<\/a> begins taking guests around Lagoon Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1960<\/strong> &#8211; Following the popularity of Disneyland&#8217;s Autopia, Lagoon opens their own sprawling automobile ride called <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/speedway-sr\/\">Speedway<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1962<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/golf-fun\/\">Golf-Fun<\/a>, a professionally-designed miniature golf course opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1965<\/strong> &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/lagoon-65\/\">Midway expands<\/a> on the north end to include a wooden <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/wild-mouse\/\">Wild Mouse<\/a> coaster, new games and a fountain dedicated to Julian Bamberger (son of Simon Bamberger), who owned the park for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Lagoon-65.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" src=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Lagoon-65-300x294.jpg\" alt=\"Lagoon '65\" class=\"wp-image-503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Lagoon-65-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Lagoon-65.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo\/Artwork: Deseret News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1966<\/strong> &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/lagoon-and-the-fair-part-i\/\">Davis County Fair<\/a> returns to Lagoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1967<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/terroride\/\">Terroride<\/a> opens in place of the old Spook House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1968<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/opera-house-square\/\">Opera House Square<\/a> opens with Victorian era buildings and shops. Ranch S. Kimball sells his business interests to the Freeds and retires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1974<\/strong> &#8211; An additional dark ride, <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/draculas-castle\/\">Dracula&#8217;s Castle<\/a>, opens in part of the old Patio Gardens building and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/sky-ride\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"9442\">Sky Ride<\/a> is added. Park manager Robert Freed passes away in July as a result of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1975<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/pioneer-village\/log-flume\/\">Log Flume<\/a> and Wild Kingdom Train open at Lagoon after being purchased from the unsuccessful Pixieland Park in Oregon. <a href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/yearbooks\/1975.html\">MORE 1975<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1976<\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/pioneer-village\/\">Pioneer Village<\/a> opens in its new home on the east side of Lagoon. The park&#8217;s first steel coaster, a Schwarzkopf <a title=\"Jet Star 2\" href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/jet-star-2\/\">Jet Star 2<\/a>, is brought in after operating at Expo &#8217;74 in Spokane, Washington. <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/yearbooks\/1976.html\">MORE 1976<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1977<\/strong> &#8211; Two new bumper car rides introduced &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/boomerang\/\">Boomerang<\/a> and the smaller <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/scamper\/\">Scamper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1979<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/tri-star\/\">Tri-Star<\/a> opens next to Jet Star 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"315\" height=\"145\" src=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Tidal-Wave-19800405-Ad.jpg\" alt=\"Tidal Wave 19800405 Ad\" class=\"wp-image-1184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Tidal-Wave-19800405-Ad.jpg 315w, https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Tidal-Wave-19800405-Ad-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1980<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/tidal-wave\/\">Tidal Wave<\/a> is added on the edge of Lagoon Lake. Additions to the new area are the <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/flying-carpet\/\">Flying Carpet<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/flying-aces\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7254\">Flying Aces<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1987<\/strong> &#8211; Lagoon celebrates 100 years and adds two rides &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/turn-of-the-century\/\">Turn Of The Century<\/a> and <a title=\"Centennial Screamer\" href=\"http:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/centennial-screamer\/\">Centennial Screamer<\/a>. Miskin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2015<\/strong> &#8211; A record-breaking mega coaster, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/cannibal\/\">Cannibal<\/a><\/span>, opens in July after years of planning and construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2017<\/strong> &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/flying-tigers\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12229\">Flying Tigers<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/ruka-safari\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12231\">Ruka Safari<\/a><\/span> are added to Kiddieland and <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/terroride\/\">Terroride<\/a> receives a massive overhaul in time for its 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2019<\/strong> &#8211; Lagoon opens the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Biergarten<\/span>, featuring the first indoor, non-franchise restaurant at the park since the old Gaslight Restaurant in Opera House Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2020<\/strong> &#8211; The COVID-19 pandemic delays the park&#8217;s opening for nearly two months, but Lagoon opens in time for Memorial Day weekend with some restrictions. Engine 86, a new kids&#8217; ride, is introduced on opening day. In August, Lagoon president Peter Freed passes away at age 99.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2021<\/strong> &#8211; An electrical fire on December 18th destroys the building that houses the Carousel Candy shop and the 44-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/lagoonhistory.com\/project\/attractions\/scamper\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5137\">Scamper<\/a> bumper car ride. Season passport holders were given the chance to make reservations to ride on weeknights when the park was closed that fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2024<\/strong> &#8211; A new north auto gate opens on a limited basis in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2025<\/strong> &#8211; During the off-season, Lagoon began phasing out the zoo and removed Cliffhanger. A rebuilt Carousel Candy shop and the new Peacock Parlour opens in March.
